Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: I have an Agilent 34461A multimeter in use - is this instrument compatible with the Keysight 34461?

Answer: Yes, the devices are one and the same model (originally housing in gray, models of more recent purchase date in anthracite). Keysight Technologies is an US American manufacturer of test and measurement instruments and devices. Keysight is the electronic instrumentation division spun off from Agilent Technologies in 2014 and has its origins in Hewlett-Packard, founded in 1939. The Trueform digital multimeter series, which includes the 34460A (6½ digit), 34461A (6½ digit), 34465A (6½ digit) and 34470A (7½ digit), was developed by Agilent and is now manufactured by Keysight. The series is a replacement for the classic HP 34401A multimeters.

Question: How much does an average multimeter cost?

Answer: Multimeters are available in various designs such as desktop/benchtop, handheld or modular (for example for USB/PC). In addition, there are different levels of supported technical measurement features and functions, interfaces, etc. And finally, the accuracy, speed and quality also have a significant influence on the price. Accordingly, there are multimeters in almost all price ranges. Some simple, inexpensive handheld devices are available from around €10, while devices for professional and industrial use or high-precision devices for calibration laboratories can cost over €10,000.

Question: What does a multimeter measure and display?

Answer: Multimeters are multi-functional measuring devices, which means that they can measure a certain number of electrical quantities in defined measuring ranges, depending on the instrument's features. The measurement of voltage (in volts) is a basic feature, whereby there are already initial differences as to whether only DC (direct current) or also AC (alternating current, true RMS value, AC+DC) can be measured. In addition, there is current (in amperes, also DC and AC) and the resistance (in ohms). For resistance measurement, the device must supply a constant measuring current, so that by measuring the voltage using Ohm's law, the resistance value can be determined. Depending on the features, multimeters can measure a variety of other quantities that can be derived from voltage and current. These include, for example, capacitance, frequency/period, continuity, temperature (resistance sensors such as thermocouples, RTD, etc.), duty cycle and more.

Question: What is a True RMS multimeter?

Answer: RMS stands for Root Mean Square. Multimeters that can truly determine the RMS value according to its technical definition are called True RMS multimeters. In contrast, simple measuring instruments determine the RMS value by filtering the signal into an averaged rectified value and applying a correction factor. The value is only correct the more sinusoidal the input signal is.

Question: What interfaces do the Keysight 34461A multimeters have?

Answer: The Keysight Trueform digital multimeter series includes the 34460A (6½ digit), 34461A (6½ digit), 34465A (6½ digit), and 34470A (7½ digit) models. All models feature USB host and device interfaces as standard (front/rear), and Ethernet/LAN/LXI is also part of the standard equipment starting with the 34461A model. GPIB/IEEE488 can added as an option.
