Why Signal Adaptation and Signal Transmitters?

Measurement technology in laboratory environments differs significantly from the industrial environment in many aspects. Three important points are for example:

  • Space/distances: While measurement setups in the laboratory are often possible in a relatively small space and with short measurement lines, the industrial environment of a factory floor often requires long distances and many measurement or control points distributed over a large area.
  • Environmental conditions: While "normal" room temperature usually prevails in the laboratory, or optimal conditions are created for special measurements, for example with temperature chambers, extreme climatic conditions (dust, temperature and humidity, vibration by machines, etc.) and fluctuations are often present in the industrial environment (or even outdoors).
  • Automation: While in the laboratory measurements can often be performed manually, at least partially, or individual steps can be carried out directly by an engineer or technician, in the industrial environment as much as possible must be automated. The speed and reproducibility of the measurement often play a role here, because "time is money" in the industrial process.

Industrial signal converters and transmitters are designed and optimized exactly for use in industrial environments.

  • These modules fulfill the mentioned space/distance requirement by the fact that they can be mounted close to the measuring location. The interference-prone measuring lines, for example to the sensor, can thus be kept short. In the module, the acquired signals are converted, either by A/D directly into a digital signal or into easily transmittable standard signals. The advantage is that the sensor signal is simultaneously adapted and linearized for subsequent evaluation. In addition, the modules can be networked over large areas and distances, e.g. if a LAN transmission or other bus is supported by the transmitter modules. A module takes over a measuring point with one or more inputs and/or outputs.
  • The modules also meet the requirements for adaptation to environmental conditions. This starts with aspects such as robustness (extended temperature ranges, IP standards, moulded or sealed housings, etc.). In addition, they often have a space-saving, safe and easy-to-mount design, for example bayed housings for DIN-rails. In addition, the power supply of such modules is often in a wider range including industrial standard ranges, moreover often designed redundantly and thus safer.
  • The modules meet the requirement for a high degree of automation through their networking and coupling to a central, controlling computer. The data collected by the module is processed by this computer and, if necessary, actuators are controlled by a module in response.

As a supplement Acromag offers...

  • Isolators, with which a transmission can be galvanically isolated. This provides more safety against voltage peaks and prevents ground loops caused by potential differences.
  • Splitters and Math modules, with which signals can be split into several paths or mathematically combined.
  • Alarms, with which an alarm is triggered when defined limit values are exceeded, for example in the form of a relay being switched.
